The role

We’re looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to lead our Machine Learning research and advance the state of the art of Artificial Intelligence applied to the built environment. The ideal candidate will have experience with leading research in applications of AI in Architecture, Engineering, Construction or similar fields involving computer vision, graph learning, robotics, planning. You will work closely with the technical and product leadership to conduct AI research targeting problems in design automation for construction. This role reports to the VP of Engineering.

What you will do

You’ll be leading the effort to tackle extreme-scale problems by discovering and adopting using state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence methods, including:

  • Develop generative systems to create and augment our synthetic data repositories for buildings and building systems
  • Research and experiment with foundation semantic models for buildings and their applications for generative design
  • Research and develop AI-assisted large-scale mathematical optimization and combinatorial search methods
  • Research and develop AI-assisted physics simulation models
  • Collaborate with our engineering team to bring research to full fruition in our generative platform
  • Aim to publish results of the research at world-class conferences to participate in the worldwide scientific community and establish Augmenta as the leader in Artificial Intelligence for the built environment

About you

  • Visible records of research in the topics above, through a combination of publications and developed/deployed applications and/or prototypes
  • Experience leading a research agenda aligned with larger organization or company goals
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, numpy, pandas, etc.
  • Strong familiarity with 2D and 3D geometry processing
  • Experience bringing a machine learning research concept through the full ML development cycle
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, innovative, interdisciplinary team environment

  • Prior experience with end-to-end research to application deployment and maintenance
  • PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or related field
  • Familiarity with Building Information Modeling and relative authoring environments (e.g. Autodesk Revit) and data formats (e.g. IFC)
  • Familiarity with fundamental Modeling & Simulation principles and methods
  • Mathematical optimization methods
  • Numerical methods for solving partial differential equations problems
  • Interactive 3D graphics and data visualization
  • Distributed computing
  • GPU acceleration of numerical algorithms using CUDA/OpenCL
